July 22, 2011 - Email your U.S. Representative NOW Background Dear Colleague: In recent months there have been attacks from Members of Congress on the va= lue and legitimacy of the social and behavioral sciences, particularly rese= arch in these areas funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and its= Directorate for Social, Behavioral & Economic Sciences (SBE). One Senator= has called for the elimination of the SBE Directorate. The Commerce, Justice, Science appropriations bill, which funds NSF for Fis= cal Year 2012, is slated to come up for a vote on the floor of the U.S. Hou= se of Representatives during the first week of August, 2011. It is likely = that amendments will be offered that would substitute political review for = peer review by: removing funding for current, merit-reviewed individual NSF= grants; eliminating the SBE Directorate entirely; and/or forcing "across-t= he-board" cuts to all federal agencies in the bill (including NSF) to fund = other programs. APA urges you to send a brief email to your U.S. Representative asking him = or her to VOTE NO on any and all such amendments to the Commerce, Justice, = Science appropriations bill.
