The College of Charleston, the nation’s thirteenth oldest institution of higher education, invites nominations and
applications for the position of Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Founded in 1770, the College
of Charleston has built its reputation upon a long tradition of excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Located
in the historic district of Charleston, South Carolina, the college offers 54 undergraduate and 20 master’s degree
programs to approximately 10,000 undergraduate students and 1,600 graduate students from fifty states and
sixty-four countries. The College is focused on achieving national preeminence, maintaining its historic strength
in the liberal arts and science tradition and its small college atmosphere while serving the varied needs of today’s
students.
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is the largest of the six schools at the College. Comprised of
the departments of Communication, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies,
and Sociology and Anthropology, HSS has over 160 full-time faculty teaching in 11 undergraduate majors and four
master’s degree programs. The School contributes substantially to the College’s First-Year Experience, general
education curriculum, and Honors College.
The successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of, and commitment to, the liberal arts and sciences
mission of the College, as well as a commitment to promoting high-quality teaching and scholarship. The Dean
must have the ability to work collaboratively with faculty in diverse disciplines and to develop and engage advisory
boards. A record of successful strategic and collaborative decision-making and innovative leadership is required.
The Dean reports to the Provost and is the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Humanities
and Social Sciences. The Dean serves as the chief advocate for the School and its faculty, and is responsible in
close collaboration with chairs and other academic program direct reports for faculty and program development,
facilitating innovation in the curriculum, fiscal planning, and fund raising. The ideal candidate will have at least
five years of administrative experience at the level of chair or above and present a record of accomplishments in
the areas of the Dean’s responsibilities. Academic qualifications commensurate with appointment as a tenured
professor in a humanities and social sciences discipline are required. The candidate should have experience with
advancement activities, as well as a deep commitment to promoting diversity across campus. Starting date is
negotiable, but no later than July 1, 2012.
