Description: Humboldt State University’s Department of Biological Sciences invites applications for one full-time temporary faculty position in Animal/Human Physiology for academic years 2012/2013 and 2013/2014. Initial appointment will be for the Fall 2012 semester. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2013, Fall 2013, and Spring 2014 will be contingent upon programmatic need and satisfactory performance evaluation. Depending on available funding and programmatic need, this position may be extended for one additional year.

Professional Qualifications: A Ph.D. in the biological sciences from an accredited college or university is preferred at time of appointment. Candidates with considerable progress towards degree completion by appointment date will be considered.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:

• Teaching experience using a variety of methodologies;
• Expertise in animal or human physiology;
• Interest and ability to teach a broad range of courses to diverse students (majors, general education students,
etc.);
• Ability and/or interest in preparing individuals to function in a culturally and ethnically diverse society.

Professional Duties: Responsibilities may include teaching lower and upper division courses in human physiology, upper division courses in animal physiology and supervision of undergraduate research. Other responsibilities will depend on the expertise of the applicant; possibilities include teaching lower division Principles of Biology, Introductory Zoology, or upper division Genetics Lab. Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues.

General Information: Humboldt State University is part of the 23-campus California State University system. The University has a comprehensive arts and sciences curriculum, which is recognized nationally for its high academic quality. Founded in 1913, HSU is one of the premier, public institutions in the western United States; it is a residential and rural campus with an enrollment of approximately 8,000 students. The main campus is located in Arcata, California, in the northwestern part of the state along the coast, situated among redwood trees in an area that offers unmatched scenic beauty, moderate climate and opportunities for outdoor activities. The Department of Biological Sciences is known for providing students with balanced and well-rounded degrees in Biology, Botany, and Zoology. We also have an active graduate (Masters level) program in Biology. Resources for study include: the newly renovated Telonicher Marine Lab; a 90 ft. oceangoing vessel, the Coral Sea; molecular biology and tissue culture core facilities; scanning and transmission electron microscopes; and environmental chambers.
