Assistant Professor of Biology (Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior; Invertebrate organisms)
Faculty will be responsible for teaching courses in the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science Department. Examples of primary course responsibilities are lower and upper division courses in Physiology, Neuroscience, Ecology, Evolution, Toxicology, Bioinformatics, and Biochemistry. The faculty member will also be expected to develop partnerships with regional major employers such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Graduate career options with UNM, NMSU, UTEP, UTSA, etc.
We recently got a 1 million dollar NSF grant to assist undergraduate work in labs so we are set for the next 4-5 years with student assistantships at no cost to the Faculty. We have also started a laboratory in which we have been building a rig and have a fluorescence macroscope, neurolucida micrcoscope, lots of AD instruments to record extra / intra signals, as well as Backyardbrains equipment for outreach. I (current Chair of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science) recently stepped up to an Interim Dean role at the College and my academic efforts are more limited to "Undergraduate Research Experiences" Courses, and a Biology Seminar that I started 5 years ago in which speakers come in. These efforts, I'd like to continue and need help. The ideal candidate will collaborate and share space on with Dr. Ulises M. Ricoy (Chair).
The ideal candidate will be outgoing pursuing extramural funding mechanisms exploring low cost approaches and undergraduate neuroscience / physiology publishing venues, as well as heavily involved in STEM outreach activities. We are interested in a person that has experience and/or willing to explore invertebrate organisms (NSF and NIH) with undergraduates as teaching/research methods, given we are a small rural College without Animal facilities. For example, we have been focusing on invertebrates (cockroaches) to examine locomotor behavior, stimulant effects, eco-toxicology as well neural activity. These projects have yielded numerous poster presentations at local and national meetings and even peer-reviewed publications. Slowly, we are placing Northern NM College as a national model for Low Cost Approaches in STEM / Biomedical Education / Research with underserved undergraduate populations. Faculty will work with the director; chair, faculty, deans and the provost to further develop and implement the Baccalaureate programs in biology and environmental sciences. Committee work is expected from all instructors. Service to the Department, College and Community and Research Scholarship in the field is also expected. Candidate will be required to write and edit student and learning assessment instruments, and tactical and strategic plans for the BCES programs.
All Professors are expected to deliver corresponding laboratories to selected courses and to work effectively to deliver of safe and relevant laboratory and field exercises.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Assist with development, implementation and evaluation of policies and procedures as related to programs of instruction.
· Participate in faculty in-service training as necessary to provide effective and efficient programs of instruction and promote faculty development activities as required.
· Coordinate the identification, implementation any necessary changes in curricular offerings commensurate with community needs and specifically student needs. This will include assisting with school catalog development as related to curricular offerings.
· Establish dialogue and work with in collaboration between secondary and pre-secondary pipeline institutions and programs.
· Participate in industry or community related environmental initiatives that support professional development, program development, the College mission, and community objectives.
Assist on matters related to institutional accreditation efforts and on matters related to grant writing and administration.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
PhD in life sciences; Postdoctoral and Teaching experience required
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
· PhD in life sciences (Physiology, Neuroscience, Neuroethology) with at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience.
· Record of research in field and demonstrated ability to develop a nationally-competitive research program with undergraduates.
· Three years of teaching experience, preferably at a 4 or 2 year, post-secondary institution.
· Commitment to the use of new technologies in teaching
· A firm commitment and experience with serving the needs of multi-cultural students in an educational setting
· Recognized understanding and experience in undergraduate research initiatives related to neuroscience, physiology and pharmacology/toxicology and research
· Competency in presenting effective oral and written communications
· Have experience in STEM undergraduate research and grant writing
