Neuroscience Laboratory Supervisor

The Laboratory Supervisor for the Undergraduate Program in Neuroscience at Boston University is responsible for all aspects of teaching lab management and technical preparation for the Programs laboratory courses. Under the direction of the faculty Laboratory Directors for these courses (currently two per semester), this position will:

  • Maintain inventory and order supplies as needed
  • Perform pre-class set up, in-class troubleshooting, and post-class tear down for each weeks labs
  • Prepare any needed reagents, fly crosses, or cell cultures prior to each class, with long-term planning to ensure their timely availability throughout the semester
  • Care for and propagate fruit fly and cell culture stocks
  • Supervise any student employees hired to assist with laboratory prep
  • Maintain lab equipment and instruct faculty in its use
  • Work with the course teaching team to pilot new labs and revise existing labs and associated teaching materials
  • Perform general laboratory maintenance including cleaning, organizing, and disposing of hazardous/animal wastes generated by these labs.

  • Bachelor's Degree required, Master's Degree preferred.
  • One or more years of laboratory research experience in neuroscience, biology, or a related discipline (research as an undergraduate is acceptable).
  • Experience with standard life science laboratory techniques, such as pipetting, light microscopy, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and/or Western blotting.
  • Proficiency with basic administrative software such as MS Office suite, especially the ability to maintain Excel spreadsheets to track purchases and inventory.
  • Must work well with others in the Programs teaching team, be well organized, detail oriented, and able to self-direct their work with some oversight from program Faculty. 
  • Prior experience with mammalian cell culture and/or rearing of Drosophila fruit flies is a plus.
