Duties: The Department of Physiology (PSL) at Michigan State University (MSU) seeks two engaging instructors with a strong interest in undergraduate education who are trained in neuroscience or a closely related biomedical discipline. These are full-time, fixed-term (non-tenure track), academic year (9-month). Appointments are for one academic year and are renewed annually based on funding and performance. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience. The successful candidate must demonstrate effective teaching of neuroscience, physiology, or other related classes to undergraduates. Specific duties include: 1) working with Neuroscience Program faculty to develop and implement lecture, seminar-style, and/or discussion-based neuroscience courses, 2) teaching multiple sections of an established core laboratory course required for Neuroscience majors, and 3) playing an active and integral role in the broader mission of excellence in undergraduate education within the Neuroscience Program and PSL department including committee service, outreach efforts, and innovation in the classroom. Instructional duties for these faculty positions include working with the teaching team (composed of other faculty, academic and technical staff, graduate teaching assistants, and undergraduate learning assistants) to develop and teach upper-level neuroscience courses, carry out instruction of a variety of neuroscience laboratory modules (including electroencephalography, drosophila behavior, sheep brain anatomy, and crayfish neurophysiology), supervising laboratory staff and learning assistants, assessing student learning (including writing assignments), and reporting grades. The successful candidates will actively collaborate with current faculty and MSU informational technology staff to advance MSU’s strong commitment to undergraduate STEM education. Requirements Qualifications: These positions require a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in neuroscience or a closely related biomedical science. Previous experience in teaching neuroscience to undergraduates in the classroom and/or laboratory settings is also required.  Applicants must be able to work effectively with large numbers of students from diverse educational backgrounds. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in laboratory instruction using electrophysiological, behavioral, and/or anatomical research techniques, evidence-based and active learning approaches to teach scientific principles, online student-learning platforms, and documented ability to successfully mentor students including those from groups underrepresented in STEM.  Qualified applicants should submit: 1) a cover letter describing your interest in the position and qualifications, 2) a statement of teaching philosophy and experience (limited to 3 pages) that describes the applicant’s experience in instruction and mentoring of students, including experience teaching and mentoring students from broadly diverse demographic and social backgrounds, and plans to promote and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within teaching, 3) curriculum vitae, and 4) names and email addresses of three references.
